Fenmei Hu, artist and food lover

I am Fenmei Hu, born in China, grew up in Holland. I am a visual artist primarily working in Rotterdam. I did my art studies in Amsterdam, but Rotterdam has stolen my heart. In 2011, I founded Studio Zi, a Chinese artists and designers collective in Rotterdam. My passion is of course art; making my own artworks, creating art events, curating art exhibitions and organizing Chinese cultural and art events for all people. Besides this I also have another passion: Food.

Whenever I organize an event, I put food as part of it. I see that food is connecting people without words, like art is doing. Food can tell stories, and stories of a dish can make a simple dish more special and tastier then it was. Like making paintings, whenever I cook for events, I cook with my (yellow) heart.

Steffen Maas, designer and food lover

The design of the FoodGuide™ and The Yellow Heart™ visual concept are by Steffen Maas. He is a Dutch graphic designer who has a warm heart for China. For many years he has been invited by universities in Beijing, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Wenzhou and Shanghai to teach design students. Steffen lives very close to ChinaTown Rotterdam. So eating in there is very normal to him. Knowing Steffen, he likes to eat everything – at least try everything!

Steffen’s designs are always very sharp, clear and typographical. I am a big fan of his work. I can say, he is really an example of how good Dutch design is. In his studio Steffen mixes design with fine art. His latest project Goghflow has been a great success: his works were shown in the house where Vincent van Gogh lived in Zundert, where he was invited as an Artist-in-Residency. I am very glad Steffen and I are working together on this unique FoodGuide™.

Yiyu Zhao, photographer and food lover

All photographs in this book are made by my dear friend Yiyu. She is so patient with me, and really a great date to eat with. She and I have the same taste in food. So everything I like, she likes too! While working on this book I got to know her even more. Yiyu’s photos are so clear. And like me, she doesn’t like to «photo- shop» pictures. So all pictures in this book are real! Yiyu awill also be my partner in crime for The Yellow Heart Tours. She will give tours in English and Chinese (Mandarin).
